Prescription Drugs

When it’s time to take your medicine, you’ll find it goes down a little easier knowing that CVS Caremark has you covered.

Things to Consider

Maximize your prescription drug coverage by keeping these tips in mind:

  • If your drug isn’t on the formulary — a list of generic and brand name drugs that are approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and covered under your prescription drug plan — you’ll pay more for it. You can find a list of covered medications on the CVS Caremark website.
  • The cost of your prescription depends on how your medication is classified. The higher the tier, the more you’ll pay. You can use the CVS Check Drug Cost tool and the Benefits Cost Comparison tool, both available on Benefits In-Site, to do a side-by-side comparison of what you’ll pay out of pocket for your medication under each of the medical plans.
  • Because many brand name drugs are expensive, you may be required to pay the copay or coinsurance of a higher tier — plus the cost difference between brand name and generic drugs — if you choose a brand when a generic is available.
  • If you’re enrolled in a UMR or Meritain Health medical plan, take advantage of the CSL Employee Drug Program. RxCrossroads by McKesson covers four CSL prescription drugs — Afstyla®, Hizentra®, Idelvion® and Zemaira® — at no cost to you.
  • Certain drugs have quantity limits — for example, a 30-day supply — to reduce costs and encourage proper use.
  • You can save on medications you take regularly by having a 90-day supply mailed directly to your home. Go to the CVS Caremark Mail Service Pharmacy page to begin.
  • The Affordable Care Act requires that certain preventive care drugs are covered 100% when you fill them in-network. Find the list of preventive drugs on the CVS Caremark website.
